Six of ours are heading south for Grappling Industries Sunshine Coast on Sunday 4 October, at Caloundra Indoor Stadium in Golden Beach.
Who’s competing
Four of our juniors are on the mats, and both gyms are represented. Taio Maunder, Kasch Maunder and Elke Maunder are competing, with Garrett cornering them for the day, and Blakeley Perkins is making the trip down from Innisfail.
Harrison Carter-Brown is competing too. If you have signed up at Stratford in the last while, Harrison is the one who sorted you out at the front desk.
And Ayden Moore is in, which is the nice part of this one. Ayden trained with us before moving to the Sunshine Coast, and he will be competing on what are now his home mats. Once you have trained here you are one of ours wherever you end up.
About the event
It is a gi and no-gi round robin tournament, so competitors are guaranteed a run of matches rather than going home after one loss. Grappling Industries runs a big room: more than 240 athletes had registered when this was written and entries were still open, so it will be a long day. The organisers award a Best Overall Academy for adults and a Best Overall Academy for kids, with team standings updated live through the day.

One thing for everyone else
It is the Saturday–Monday long weekend, and both gyms are closed on Monday 5 October for the King’s Birthday. Normal timetable resumes Tuesday.
